Duck Farming — Assam and Kerala

Contributed by System

Ducks are integral to wetland farming systems in Assam, Bengal, and Kerala, where they are raised on fish ponds, paddy fields, and backwater areas. Khaki Campbell and Indian Runner breeds dominate commercial duck farming. Khaki Campbell averages 300 eggs per year — significantly more than hens. Ducks raised on paddy fields eat pest insects, snails, and weeds without damaging crop — integrated pest management system. Kerala's Kuttanad wetland farmers practice duck-fish-paddy integrated farming on reclaimed land below sea level. Ducks are released after paddy harvest to glean fallen grain and insects. In Assam, the Sylheti duck breed is semi-wild and resistant to flu. Duck eggs are larger, richer in yolk, and preferred for baking and Chinese cuisine. Duck meat produces succulent roast popular in NE India and Kerala Christian cuisine. Low infrastructure cost — ducks forage widely and need minimal supplemental feed.
