Dholpur Beige Sandstone: A Premier Building Stone
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Dholpur district is the source of one of India's most prized building stones, the Dholpur beige sandstone (also called Dholpur pink or Agra stone), a fine-grained, easily worked sedimentary stone. This stone was used in the construction of Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi's parliament complex, and hundreds of colonial and post-independence government buildings across India. The quarries around Dholpur town and Bari tehsil employ thousands of stone cutters, dressers, and workers. The stone occurs in multiple colours including beige, pink, and grey, allowing architectural differentiation within single projects. Stonecutters use both traditional hand chisels and modern diamond-blade saws. Dust lung disease (silicosis) is a serious occupational health hazard that community health workers and NGOs are campaigning against through protective equipment distribution and health monitoring.
