Dahod Panchmahal Bhil Tribal Embroidery Craft Gujarat

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Dahod district in eastern Gujarat is the heart of the Bhil tribal belt where Bhil, Nayaka, and Rathwa communities practise traditional tribal embroidery on blouses (kapadu) and skirts using bold geometric patterns in yellow, red, and green thread on black cotton cloth, different in style from the Kutch embroidery and representing the sub-Himalayan tribal aesthetic of central India's eastern edge. Dahod's Rathwa tribal community practises the Pithora painting tradition — ritual wall paintings similar to those in Madhya Pradesh's tribal belt — made as prayers and blessings for home festivals. The district is one of Gujarat's most agricultural-deficit areas and a source of seasonal migrant labour to sugarcane-cutting, brick kilns, and diamond polishing in Surat and Ahmedabad.
