Pongal Kolam Art — Rangoli Drawing Tradition of Coimbatore

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Coimbatore district's women maintain one of Tamil Nadu's most vibrant Kolam (rangoli) traditions, with elaborate geometric and floral designs drawn in rice flour on doorsteps each morning. During the four-day Pongal festival in January, Coimbatore homes display competition-quality kolams — some spanning 3–4 metres — incorporating traditional Kuzhal Kolam (curved loop designs), Kambi Kolam (line-and-dot matrices), and Pulli Kolam (dot-and-curve patterns). The most skilled designs encode mathematical principles including prime number dot grids and symmetry operations. Young girls learn kolam from mothers and grandmothers from early childhood. Coimbatore's kolam tradition has been documented by ethnomathematicians who study the underlying grid structures, and the art form has influenced contemporary pattern design internationally.
