Coconut Farming Kanyakumari Coimbatore Tamil Nadu
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Tamil Nadu is India third-largest coconut producing state, with major production in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Salem, and Kanyakumari districts where the coconut palm is the keystone of the village economy, providing copra for edible oil, coconut milk for cooking, green tender coconut for commercial fresh nut market, coir fibre, toddy palm wine, and timber from old palms. The Tamil Nadu coconut farmer typically cultivates small orchards of 100 to 500 trees on irrigated red laterite or alluvial land, with the Coimbatore and Salem regions using drip irrigation and fertigation for intensified commercial production. The traditional knowledge system of coconut cultivation includes the Chettiyar community variety selection for high-copra yield, the timing of harvest by the sound of nut when tapped, and the identification of symptoms of root wilt disease by the characteristic drooping of lower fronds. Kanyakumari coconuts, grown in the southernmost coastal climate influenced by both monsoons, are noted for their high fat-content copra and are sourced by Coconut Development Board certified oil mills. The Coconut Development Board headquartered in Kochi supports cooperative formation and precision farming adoption in Tamil Nadu.
