Changthangi Pashmina Nomadic Rearing Leh Ladakh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Ladakhi Pashmina is produced by the Changpa nomadic pastoralists of the Changthang plateau in Leh district, who rear the Changthangi goat (Capra hircus laniger) at elevations above 4,500 meters. The Changthangi goat produces the world's finest natural fibre — Pashmina underdown — combed from the inner coat in spring. Ladakh Changpa nomads follow traditional seasonal migration routes (Kharnak and Korzok areas) with their herds. GI protection covers Changthangi Pashmina of Ladakh. The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council supports Changpa herder cooperatives with flock health services, fibre processing machines, and direct supply linkage to Srinagar Pashmina weavers. The ultra-fine Ladakh Pashmina fibre with micron counts below 14 microns commands premium prices in the global luxury textile market.
