Cachar Assam Bamboo Flute Musical Instrument
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Cachar district in Barak Valley, southern Assam, is a centre for bamboo musical instrument making, particularly flutes and the tromba horn used in Bishnupriya Manipuri and Bengali folk traditions. Artisans in Silchar select mature bamboo culms of specific diameter and wall thickness, bore finger holes at precise intervals using heated iron rods, and finish the surface with coconut oil. The bansuri bamboo flute is made for both folk and classical Indian music. Cooperative craft societies in Cachar supply instruments to music schools and folk performers across Northeast India. Tromba horn makers in Cachar also produce the khol drum for Vaishnavite kirtan. NEHHDC connects Cachar bamboo craft cooperatives with national craft fairs.
