Birbhum Bankura Terracotta Temple Architecture Bishnupur

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Bishnupur in Bankura district (bordering Birbhum) is the centre of Bengal's terracotta temple architecture tradition, where the Malla rajas of Bishnupur built an extraordinary cluster of 17th-century brick and terracotta temples — Rasmancha, Pancha Ratna, Jorbangla, Shyamrai — with every surface covered in terracotta plaques depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Krishnalila, hunting scenes, and European sailing ships. The Bishnupur terracotta tradition uses local laterite-derived clay fired without glaze to achieve the distinctive warm brick-red colour, and the temple panels are among India's finest examples of narrative terracotta relief sculpture from the Malla period. Bishnupur also produced the Bishnupur gharana of Hindustani classical music, a distinct style linked to the Malla court that emphasised dhrupad and thumri forms.
