Bhojpur Bhikhari Thakur Nautanki Folk Theater
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Bhojpur district is the homeland of Bhikhari Thakur (1887–1971), the most celebrated Bhojpuri folk dramatist whose nautanki plays on social themes — caste discrimination, female infanticide, widow remarriage, and migrant labour — transformed Bhojpuri folk theater into a vehicle for social critique. Bhikhari Thakur's compositions including Bideshia, Gabbe Singh, and Beti Bechwa remain part of the living folk tradition performed at village marriages and festivals across the Bhojpuri belt of Bihar, UP, and the Bhojpuri diaspora. The Bhikhari Thakur birth anniversary is observed in Bhojpur as a cultural festival with village theater performances, and his legacy is taught in Bihar's school curriculum as a folk literary heritage.
