Ambaji Temple: Marble Architecture and Pilgrimage of Banaskantha

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Ambaji temple at Ambaji town in Banaskantha district is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas (sacred sites of the goddess) and one of Gujarat's most important pilgrimage destinations. The deity, Amba (Ambaji, a form of Durga), is represented not by an idol but by a sacred geometric yantra (Vishwa Yantra), a rare aniconic form. The temple complex is built in white Rajasthani marble with elaborate carved toranas and mandapa, reflecting a 20th-century reconstruction. The Gabbar Hill behind the temple, where a natural cave shrine has existed for millennia, is reached by 999 steps and draws over 100,000 pilgrims during major Navaratri celebrations. The Ambaji area's marble quarries supply high-quality white marble used in temples across India. The marble-working craft, with carvers producing temple icons, ritual vessels, and inlay work, employs hundreds of artisans in Ambaji and nearby villages.
