Banana Cultivation in Jalgaon and Karnataka
Contributed by ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana
India is the world's largest banana producer, contributing 26% of global output. Maharashtra's Jalgaon district and Karnataka's Haveri and Dharwad districts are the major commercial banana belts. Cavendish banana (Grand Naine variety) dominates commercial farming.
Major varieties:
- Grand Naine (G9): The dominant commercial variety nationwide. Dwarf stature (1.5-2m), resistant to Panama wilt, high yield (25-35 kg/bunch). Suited for both fresh market and export.
- Robusta (Basrai): The original tall Cavendish. Replaced by Grand Naine but still grown in Jalgaon. Better flavour but lower yield.
- Nendran: Kerala's famous cooking banana (plantain). Used for banana chips, nendran chips being one of Kerala's most famous snack exports.
- Red banana (Sevvazhai): Grown in Tamil Nadu and southern Karnataka. Sweeter, higher retail price, but smaller market.
Jalgaon belt: Jalgaon (Maharashtra) is Asia's largest banana market. The Jalgaon Banana Association regulates trading. Drip irrigation with fertigation is standard. Tissue culture (TC) planting material from government labs has transformed productivity from 20 to 35+ tonnes/hectare.
Planting: Tissue culture plants at 1.8m x 1.8m spacing (1,500-2,000 plants/hectare) are now standard. Conventional suckers at 2.5m x 2.5m (1,600 plants/hectare) are cheaper but have higher disease risk. Banana takes 10-14 months to first harvest.
Crop management: Propping (supporting the bunch with bamboo) is essential from bunch emergence to prevent stem breakage. Remove male bud (bell) after last hand develops to redirect energy to fruit filling.
Panama wilt (Fusarium wilt): The biggest threat to banana globally. No chemical cure - only prevention through certified TC plants, proper drainage, and crop rotation. Affected farms must rest the land for 3-5 years.
Export opportunity: Grand Naine from Jalgaon and coastal Karnataka meets EU phytosanitary standards. Export price: Rs 15-25/kg FOB versus Rs 8-15/kg domestic wholesale.
