Bamboo Craft Sirsi Uttara Kannada Karnataka

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Sirsi in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka is an important centre for bamboo craft utilizing the locally abundant Dendrocalamus strictus (solid male bamboo) and Bambusa arundinacea (spiny bamboo) species from the Western Ghats forest reserve. Bamboo craftspersons from the Medara (bamboo worker) community in Sirsi, Kumta, and Ankola talukas produce baskets, mats, trays, fans, agricultural sieves, and furniture frames using traditional split-and-weave technique. Bamboo harvested at 3 to 4 year maturity (green outer skin removed after cutting) is split into uniform strips 5 to 15 millimetres wide with a sharp curved blade and scraped smooth. Strips are seasoned in running water or smoke to prevent cracking and insect attack. Weaving techniques include hexagonal lattice (most open), twill, and plain over-under. Bamboo furniture joints are assembled with rattan lashing without adhesive — a fully repairable and biodegradable joint. Sirsi bamboo craft produces the traditional Karnataki uppara basket (deep conical harvest basket), Nilakunta mat (for sleeping), and agri tools including winnowing fans and grain storage containers. Forest Department-sponsored bamboo plantation program in Uttara Kannada supplies cultivated bamboo to reduce pressure on natural forest stock. Karnataka Forest Industries Corporation markets bamboo products. KVIC-supported artisan clusters in Sirsi produce contemporary bamboo home décor including lamp shades, wall panels, and planter boxes for urban and export market.
