Watermelon and Summer Vegetable Production in Aurangabad

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Aurangabad district's canal command area along the Godavari receives irrigation from the Jayakwadi dam system, enabling vegetable cultivation in areas that were previously purely dry-land farmed. Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) and muskmelon (Cucumis melo) are important summer cash crops cultivated on drawdown riverine land and in irrigated fields. Watermelon cultivation requires sandy loam well-drained soil, and the Aurangabad riverine tracts near the Godavari provide ideal conditions. Varieties including Sugar Baby and Arka Manik are grown. Watermelons and muskmelons are loaded onto trucks at Aurangabad mandi and sold to Mumbai, Pune, and regional markets. Women in Aurangabad's farming villages process surplus melons into dried watermelon seeds (magaj) for sale as a snack and garnish. The Marathwada Krishi Sahakari cooperatives help vegetable farmers access MSP-equivalent floor prices through collective marketing.
