Silk Thread Heritage: Paithan and Aurangabad Weaving Cluster
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Paithan-Aurangabad region maintains the largest concentration of Paithani silk weavers in Maharashtra, with entire families devoting their livelihoods to the craft across generations. Master weavers (ustads) are the technical authorities, maintaining design archives of peacock-eye patterns, lotus-bud borders, and figurative human and animal motifs that identify the finest Paithani work. The silk used in Paithani traditionally came from Bangalore and was twisted into the appropriate counts by local throwsters. Zari (gold thread) used in Paithani borders uses a real gold and silver wire-wrapped silk core in premium versions, while cheaper versions use metallic yarn. The Paithani weaving cooperative at Paithan links farmers directly with weaver households, removing commission agents. Annual Paithani exhibitions at Aurangabad draw buyers from across India. Contemporary designers have collaborated with Paithan weavers to create Paithani-inspired fusion textiles for global fashion markets.
