Ashwagandha Cultivation — Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh
Contributed by System
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), the "Indian ginseng," is a medicinal shrub cultivated in Rajasthan (Nagaur, Jhalawar) and MP (Mandsaur, Neemuch). Roots harvested after 6 months contain withanolides — adaptogenic compounds with proven effects on stress, immunity, and testosterone. India is the world's largest ashwagandha producer. Nagaur variety (NRC-B) is considered premium with 2–3% withanolide content. Roots sell at ₹80–180/kg dried; extract powder at ₹600–1,200/kg. Cooperative organic certification adds 20–30% price premium. Global nutraceutical brands (KSM-66, Sensoril) source from Rajasthan cooperatives. Demand is growing 15–20% annually.
