Iron Ore and Traditional Metal Craft Heritage of Anantapur Region

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Anantapur district borders the Bellary iron ore belt — one of India's richest iron ore deposits — and the two regions share a traditional iron-working culture. Kammara (blacksmith) artisan communities in Anantapur have historically used locally smelted iron to produce agricultural tools, cart hardware, and temple metalwork. Traditional smelting using clay furnaces and bellows was practised in village workshops until the 20th century. The shift to commercial pig iron and scrap as raw material for modern forge shops did not eliminate the traditional forging knowledge — Anantapur's blacksmiths continue to shape agricultural implements using anvil, hammer, and traditional heat treatment techniques that produce harder, more durable tools than mass-produced alternatives. Tribal communities in the eastern forest areas maintain iron-tipped arrow and trap-making skills.
