Amritsar district in central Punjab is the spiritual capital of Sikhism — the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple, rebuilt 1604) at the centre of the sacred Sarovar (pool) receives 100,000+ visitors daily, making it the most visited religious site in the world. Amritsar's Jallianwala Bagh memorial marks the 1919 massacre of unarmed civilians by British troops. The Wagah-Attari border ceremony (daily flag-lowering parade between India and Pakistan armies) draws thousands of spectators. Punjab is India's wheat bowl — Amritsar and surrounding districts in the Doab grow high-yielding wheat varieties in winter and paddy in summer. Phulkari (flower work) embroidery — geometric patterns chain-stitched on coarse cotton cloth in bright silk thread — is Punjab's signature textile tradition, historically made by women as wedding trousseau gifts.
