Amla (Indian Gooseberry) — Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh
Contributed by System
Pratapgarh district in Uttar Pradesh is the Amla capital of India, earning it the title "Amla City." Over 50,000 acres of amla (Phyllanthus emblica / Emblica officinalis) orchards surround the Kunda and Patti blocks. The Chakaiya, Krishna, and Kanchan varieties dominate. Amla trees are harvested November-February when fruits turn yellowish-green. Each tree yields 100-300 kg annually after 8-10 years of establishment. Amla is one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin C (600-800mg/100g — 20× that of oranges) and antioxidants (ellagic acid, gallic acid). Traditional processing at Pratapgarh includes sun-drying (sookhi amla), candy-making (amla murabba), juice pressing, and amla powder (churna) for Ayurvedic formulations — Chyawanprash, Triphala, and Amalaki rasayana all use Pratapgarh amla. NRCC (National Research Centre on Citrus) collaborates with Pratapgarh Amla Producer Company for certification and export of dried amla.
