Ajrak Resist Block Print Barmer Rajasthan
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Ajrak is a natural-dye resist block printing tradition of the Khatri community of Barmer and Jaisalmer districts of Rajasthan, closely related to the Ajrak of Bhuj in Kutch, Gujarat, with which it shares origins in the Sindhi textile tradition. The Rajasthan Ajrak uses traditional wooden blocks to print mud-resist on cotton or silk cloth, followed by sequences of indigo and alizarin madder dye baths and sun bleaching to build up the characteristic deep blue and brick-red geometric pattern. The Ajrak process requires over 14 steps and uses only natural dyes and materials. GI protection covers Barmer Ajrak. Cooperative societies in Barmer and Jasol villages support Khatri artisans with block sets, natural dyes, and exhibition access at national craft fairs. Rajasthan Ajrak is used for bedcovers, shawls, and fashion fabric by urban and export buyers.
