Wangala Harvest Festival of the Garo of Meghalaya

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Wangala is the 100 Drums festival of the Garo people of Meghalaya, celebrated after the rice harvest to thank the creator god Misi Saljong for the harvest. The festival involves mass drumming with large cylindrical buffalo-hide drums, dance, feasting, and sacrifice. The wangala drum (kram) is a large barrel drum carved from a log with buffalo hide heads. The festival continues for 2 to 7 days depending on the village. The Garo of East, West, and South Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya participate. Wangala music is distinct — the intricate interlocking drum rhythms create a complex polyrhythmic texture. The Wangala Festival at Asanang draws over 10,000 participants and has become a major cultural tourism event. Traditional Garo material culture — woven textiles (dakmanda, chambari), bamboo instruments, and headgear — is displayed during Wangala. Meghalaya state government supports the festival as a tribal cultural heritage preservation initiative.
