Visakhapatnam (Vizag) on the Andhra Pradesh coast is the country largest fishing harbour, handling over 1,00,000 tonnes of sea fish annually from a fleet of 3,000 mechanised trawlers and 500 deep-sea fishing vessels. Cooperative fishing societies associated with the Fisheries Department operate the Vizag fishing harbour auction system, icing and transport logistics to Mumbai and Delhi markets, and export processing plants for shrimp, croaker, and ribbon fish. The Visakhapatnam deep-sea cooperative fleet targets pomfret, seer fish, tuna, and jumbo prawn in the Bay of Bengal exclusive economic zone. Jalari caste fishermen from Bheemunipatnam and Naupada beaches form traditional cooperative boat crews on large mechanised vessels. The cooperative micro-insurance scheme covers marine accidents for registered fishing crew members. Vizag is also a major prawn aquaculture supply hub connecting inland culture ponds to export processing plants.
