Vaishali Makhana Litchi Buddhist Heritage Bihar

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Vaishali district is historically significant as the world's first recorded republic (6th century BC) and one of the final teachings sites of both Gautama Buddha and Vardhamana Mahavira. The district's alluvial soils in the Gandak basin produce litchi orchards complementary to Muzaffarpur's, and chaur oxbow lakes in Vaishali produce makhana foxnut — making it part of both the GI-protected litchi and makhana growing zones. The Vishwa Shanti Stupa at Vaishali's Kolhua archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage tentative list property, and the Ananda Stupa pillar are Buddhist pilgrimage sites drawing Japanese and Sri Lankan Buddhist tourists who combine archaeological visits with Vaishali's natural landscape tourism.
