Sugarcane and Traditional Jaggery Production Haridwar Terai
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The terai plains of Haridwar district support significant sugarcane cultivation with traditional jaggery (gur) making providing livelihoods for farming families. Small jaggery-making units using animal or engine-powered crushers process freshly harvested cane into raw jaggery during the winter season. The hot fresh jaggery poured into moulds takes characteristic shapes - rounds, blocks, or conical forms. Different grades based on colour and purity command different market prices. Traditional healers recommend specific jaggery preparations with herbs for respiratory ailments, digestive health, and blood purification. Village markets during jaggery season are vibrant gathering points where quality is assessed through smell, colour, and taste by experienced buyers.
