Doon Valley Basmati: Geographic Indication Protected Rice

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Doon Valley Basmati rice has received Geographical Indication (GI) status recognising the unique terroir of the Dehradun valley that produces its distinctive aroma and grain characteristics. The Doon Valley's specific combination of alluvial soil, glacier-fed irrigation water from the Tons and Suswa rivers, and the mountain climate with cool nights during grain filling creates the characteristic fragrance compounds in this variety. Traditional cultivation methods avoiding synthetic pesticides are mandatory for GI certification. The rice commands premium prices in domestic and export markets. The GI status protects the livelihoods of farmers in this specific geographic zone and prevents passing off rice from other regions as genuine Doon Valley Basmati.
