Tawang Monpa Tribe Weaving Carpet Arunachal Pradesh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Tawang in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, the site of the famous Tawang Monastery the largest Buddhist monastery in India outside Tibet, is the homeland of the Monpa tribe whose traditional weaving produces distinctive woollen carpets, chhuba robes, and shawls using local yak and sheep wool on backstrap looms. Monpa weavers incorporate traditional Buddhist iconographic motifs including the Dorje thunderbolt, lotus, and dragon into carpet borders and shawl patterns. The Tawang high altitude — over 3000 metres — means yak herding is the basis of the pastoral economy, and yak wool and yak butter are central to Monpa material culture. Cooperative weaving societies supported by Arunachal Pradesh Handloom and Handicrafts Department provide design training and market access for Monpa woven products. The Tawang festival in October-November is the principal cultural showcase for Monpa craft. Tawang produces apple orchards and herbal medicines alongside the weaving economy.
