Tasar Silk Cocoon Rearing — Jharkhand Tribal Communities
Contributed by System
Tasar silk (Antheraea mylitta) is produced in sal and arjun forests of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha — primarily by Adivasi communities. Tribal rearers hang egg cards on host trees, protect larvae from predators, and collect mature cocoons after 30–35 days. Cocoons are boiled, reeled, and woven into golden-hued tasar fabric. Jharkhand alone produces 65% of India's tasar silk. Jharkhand government and KVIC support tribal tasar cooperatives. GI-tagged Jharkhand Tasar Silk is valued for its natural sheen and breathability.
