Sundarbans Royal Bengal Tiger Ecotourism West Bengal
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Sundarbans Tiger Reserve in South 24 Parganas West Bengal is the world largest mangrove forest and home to the largest wild population of Royal Bengal tiger, estimated at over 100 individuals in the Indian sector. The tiger population is uniquely adapted to a saline mangrove ecosystem, swimming tidal creeks and hunting Spotted deer, wild boar, and estuarine crocodile in the labyrinthine waterway network. West Bengal Forest Department cooperative ecotourism programme trains Sundarbans villagers from Gosaba, Basanti, and Canning blocks as forest guides, boat operators, and wildlife interpreters. Cooperative honey collector permits allow seasonal forest access for the traditional Mouli community. Village ecotourism homestay cooperatives provide accommodation for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers visiting the reserve. Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.
