South Goa Iron Ore Mining Konkani Fishing Margao Goa Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
South Goa district centred on Margao (Madgaon) contains Goa's iron ore mining belt in the Sanguem and Quepem talukas — Goa is one of India's largest iron ore exporters, with mining history dating to Portuguese rule and a controversial post-2000 mining boom that led to the Supreme Court suspension of all mining leases in 2018. South Goa's Colva and Palolem beaches are quieter than the north, attracting long-stay tourists. The district's fishing communities — Kharvi and Gawde castes — practice traditional fishing (ramponi net fishing in the Goa estuary) alongside mechanised trawling. Goa's traditional Konkani music (Dulpod, Mando) and the Dekhni (Indo-Portuguese dance-song tradition) are most actively preserved in South Goa's village Catholic and Hindu communities.
