Sirsa Paddy Rice Farming Rajasthan Canal

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Sirsa district receives Rajasthan Canal water through the Indira Gandhi Canal feeder that transformed the semi-arid Ghaggar-Thar interface into a productive agricultural zone, enabling paddy cultivation in areas that were formerly desert scrubland. Sirsa's paddy and wheat double crop rotation has dramatically increased farm income since the canal arrived in the 1980s, though the district faces groundwater depletion concerns similar to Punjab as paddy's high water demand is supplemented by tube-well extraction. The district's grain mandis at Sirsa, Ellenabad, and Dabwali are major procurement points for HAFED and government agencies during rabi wheat and kharif paddy harvest seasons.
