Tamas River Traditional Step-Dam and Irrigation Heritage of Satna

The Tamas River — the Tons of ancient texts — flows through Satna and carries deep mythology as the river on whose banks Valmiki composed the Ramayana after witnessing the killing of a krauncha bird. Traditional check dams and pyne diversions on the Tamas irrigate rice and wheat fields in the valley. These structures, called bandhs by local farmers, are rebuilt annually after monsoon floods wash them out, using a community labour mobilisation where each household contributes two days of work per season. The location of each bandh is selected by community elders who read soil stratification, river bend pattern, and seasonal discharge to identify optimal placement. This knowledge, accumulated over generations of flood observation, guides decisions that river engineers have validated as hydraulically sound.
