Sambalpur Ikat Weaving Cotton Silk Odisha
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Sambalpur in the Sambalpur district of western Odisha is the production centre of Sambalpuri ikat, one of India premier handwoven textile traditions characterised by intricate tie-dye resist patterning applied to cotton and silk warp before weaving. Sambalpuri sarees, dhotis, and fabric are woven in cooperative weaving clusters in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, and Balangir by Bhulia weaver caste families on traditional wooden frame looms. The distinctly bold geometric and traditional motifs including shankha conch, chakra wheel, phula flower, and deer are created by the weaver carefully counting and tying cotton yarn before dyeing each colour section. Sambalpuri textile received GI certification in 2010. The Odisha State Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society Boyanika operates retail showrooms in Bhubaneswar selling directly from cooperative weaver members. Sambalpuri traditional dress is worn at Nuakhai harvest festival and all major Odia cultural events.
