Sehore district in the Malwa plateau is the principal producing area for Sharbati wheat (Triticum aestivum GW 322 variety) — a golden-coloured, hard-grain, high-protein wheat with natural sweetness named Sharbati (sweet) that commands premium prices of 30-50% above standard wheat at flour mills in Delhi and Mumbai. Sharbati wheat from Sehore has Geographical Indication status and its story has been narrated in national media as a farmer success story — progressive farmer cooperatives in Sehore have achieved prices of Rs 3,500-4,000 per quintal versus MSP of Rs 2,100 for standard wheat. Sagar district (Saugor) is the site of Dr. Hari Singh Gour University — one of India's oldest central universities — and the district's wheat-soybean rotation farming on the Vindhya-Malwa transition soils is a significant agricultural enterprise.
