Ropar Sutlej Wetland Ecology Bird Sanctuary
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
The Ropar Wetland, designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 2002, is formed in the backwaters of the Ropar headworks where seasonal flooding creates marshes and reed beds that support over 200 bird species including the Siberian crane, bar-headed goose, and numerous waders on their Central Asian migration route. The wetland also hosts indigenous freshwater fish, otters, and a diverse macro-invertebrate community that serves as an ecological indicator for Sutlej river health. Punjab's Wetland Authority monitors Ropar wetland's water quality and bird counts, working with local fishermen's cooperatives to manage access and prevent net overuse.
