Ranthambore Fort: Medieval Military Architecture
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Ranthambore Fort, perched on a 215-metre isolated hill within the tiger reserve, is one of Rajasthan's most dramatically sited medieval fortresses and a UNESCO World Heritage component. Originally built in the 10th century CE by the Chahamana (Chauhan) dynasty, it was later strengthened by Ala-ud-Din Khalji after his 1301 siege, and subsequently held by the Mughals and Jaipur rulers. The fort's walls follow the hill's natural contours over a 7 km perimeter, with bastions, gateways, and water cisterns cut into bare rock. Three Hindu temples inside, dedicated to Ganesh, Shiva, and Ramlalaji, remain active pilgrimage sites accessible through tiger territory. The fort's Ganesh temple receives invitations (chithi) to weddings mailed by devotees across Rajasthan, a unique tradition. The architecture integrates rock outcrops into the masonry, demonstrating indigenous landscape engineering.
