Rabindra Sangeet Tagore Songs Bengal Tradition
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Rabindra Sangeet (Tagore's songs) is the body of approximately 2,232 compositions created by Rabindranath Tagore between 1877 and 1941 that form a unified musical tradition of extraordinary range and depth, encompassing devotional (puja), romantic (prem), patriotic (swadesh), seasonal (baromasi), and dance-drama (nrityanatya) categories, with each song pairing a unique raga-derived melodic line with Tagore's own poetry, creating a composite art form inseparable from Bengali cultural identity. Tagore's musical innovation drew from Dhrupad, Kheyal, Thumri, Baul, and folk sources while creating a synthetic new style that transcended each, setting a new standard for Bengali song that proved both artistically seminal and commercially dominant. The transmission of Rabindra Sangeet requires careful fidelity to Tagore's notation and tempo traditions, maintained by the institution Sangit Bhavana at Visva Bharati University in Shantiniketan, which defines the authoritative version of each song. The annual Rabindra Jayanti (birthday celebration on 25 Boishakh) is observed across the Bengali-speaking world with recitation and song programs. Rabindra Sangeet's two most famous compositions are Jana Gana Mana (India's national anthem) and Amar Sonar Bangla (Bangladesh's national anthem), making Tagore the only person to have authored two national anthems.
