Panipat Haryana Blanket Shoddy Recycled Textile
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Panipat in Haryana is known as the City of Weavers and is the largest recycled textile recycling hub in Asia. Over one thousand small mills in Panipat shred imported second-hand clothing and post-consumer textile waste into shoddy fibre — loose recycled wool, cotton, and synthetic blend. This shoddy is spun into yarn and woven into blankets, daris floor mats, and low-cost serviceable fabrics supplied to army, disaster relief organisations, municipalities, and NGOs. Panipat processes over eight hundred tonnes of textile waste daily, including imported rag bales from Europe, Japan, and Gulf countries. Cooperative weaver societies in Panipat are among the largest bulk suppliers to state governments for relief material. The sector employs over sixty thousand workers and diverts millions of tonnes of textile waste from landfill annually.
