Nadia Krishnanagar Clay Doll Craft Tradition Bengal

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Krishnanagar in Nadia district is renowned for its realistic clay doll (krishnanagar clay modelling) tradition, where hereditary Pal caste potters produce extraordinarily lifelike figurines of vegetables, fish, birds, animals, domestic scenes, and individual portrait dolls in clay painted with natural pigments. Krishnanagar clay modellers produce the famous "sujani" vegetable models — replicas of eggplants, gourds, and okra rendered in clay with realistic skin texture and colour — originally made to practise food-tasting for religious observance. Nadia's weaver community in Shantipur produces Shantipur and Fulia cotton saris on handlooms — simple cotton saris with coloured borders popular as daily-wear garments across Bengal and considered GI-tagged products.
