Kumbhalgarh Fort Wall Rajasthan Mewar Heritage Architecture
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Kumbhalgarh Fort in Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, built by Rana Kumbha of Mewar in the 15th century, has the world second longest continuous wall after the Great Wall of China. The perimeter wall extends 36 kilometres across the Aravalli hills, enclosing 360 temples and the royal palace on the highest peak. The fort was virtually impregnable during medieval times — it was breached only once in history. UNESCO designated Kumbhalgarh along with five other Rajput hill forts as a World Heritage Site in 2013. The fort forms part of a larger protected landscape including Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the second largest wolf population in India. Rajsamand cooperative tourism societies guide visitors and sell locally made Rajput heritage miniature paintings and stone carved souvenirs.
