Koli Machhimar Sea Fishing Veraval Gujarat
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Koli Machhimar fishing community of Gujarat Saurashtra and Kathiawar coast, based at the major fishing ports of Veraval, Mangrol, and Porbandar, maintains one of India largest and most productive deep-sea fisheries, deploying traditional knowledge of seasonal fish migration, monsoon current patterns, and night-sky navigation alongside motorised boats for commercial fishing of Bombay duck, pomfret, shark, and shrimp. The Koli fishing calendar is structured around the marine ecology of the Arabian Sea: the April-May peak season for pomfret, the post-monsoon October-November demersal fish recovery, and the winter tuna runs, all governed by traditional taboos prohibiting fishing on auspicious days and at certain lunar phases that coincide with known spawning periods. Shore-based processing by Koli women includes sun-drying of Bombay duck on rope lines in distinctive salt-wind drying grounds visible from miles away, and fermented fish paste preparation for local and export markets. The Veraval fishing harbour is the largest in India by catch volume and the Koli cooperative manages auction, cold storage, and dispatch to Gujarat inland markets and Mumbai.
