Katni Railway Junction and Industrial Community Heritage of Central MP
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Katni is one of the most important railway junctions in central India, where the Howrah-Mumbai main line crosses the Jabalpur-Bilaspur line, creating a major marshalling yard and locomotive maintenance depot. The railway brought a cosmopolitan working-class community to Katni from the late 19th century — mechanics, engine drivers, signalmen, and clerks from across the country who settled permanently. Railway colony culture developed distinct food, music, and social practices blending regional traditions. Railway workers maintained welfare societies, libraries, and drama clubs that created a civic culture unusual for a small MP town. The locomotive shed at Katni was a steam engine maintenance centre until diesel conversion in the 1980s; the skills accumulated by generations of fitters and mechanics represents an industrial heritage. Children of railway workers populate engineering and technical institutions across central India.
