Languriya: Folk Songs of the Kaila Devi Pilgrimage
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Languriya is a distinctive genre of devotional folk songs performed exclusively by male pilgrims en route to and at the Kaila Devi temple in Karauli. The songs address Languriya, a young male devotee of the goddess, in a playful, often ribald call-and-response format. Groups of pilgrims sing these songs while walking on the pilgrimage route, maintaining a collective rhythm that helps cover long distances. The songs use Braj Bhasha mixed with Rajasthani dialect, and their earthy language, though devotional in intent, contrasts sharply with classical religious poetry. Professional Languriya singers (gaayak) perform at the temple during Navratri, entertaining large crowds through the night. The genre demonstrates how popular Hindu devotionalism accommodates folk humour and bodily language within sacred performance.
