Jodhpur Lacquerware Furniture and Bangles Rajasthan

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Jodhpur in western Rajasthan is India's largest production center for lacquer-turned woodwork — colorful lacquered wood furniture, toys, and lac bangles produced by the Khatik and Turi communities on bow lathes using the same traditional technique as Channapatna in Karnataka but with a distinctly Rajasthani color palette of bright orange, pink, red, and gold against black or blue grounds. The lacquerware tradition in Jodhpur centers on two product streams: lac bangles (kangan) for Rajasthani women's bridal wear, and lacquer-turned decorative objects including small boxes, candlesticks, bead necklaces, and furniture components. Lac bangles are produced by applying molten lac (natural tree resin) to a spinning wooden spindle on the bow lathe, building up a cylinder of colour, and turning the lac surface to a smooth finish before slicing the cylinder into individual bangle blanks. Multiple colours are applied in sequence with the lathe spinning continuously. The technique requires continuous rotation speed management to prevent lac overheating and cracking. Jodhpur's Sarafa bazaar is the wholesale market for lac bangles supplying retail across Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh. Lac bangle demand peaks at Teej, Gangaur, Karva Chauth, and wedding season. Contemporary lacquer furniture production in Jodhpur has been adapted to global export market with antique-finish lacquer chairs, tables, and storage boxes produced for European and American home decor buyers through Jodhpur's substantial export furniture cluster.
