Hailakandi Manipuri Classical Dance Rasa Lila Assam
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Hailakandi district in Assam's Barak Valley has a significant Meitei Manipuri community that maintains the Manipuri classical dance tradition — particularly the Rasa Lila (Radha-Krishna love dance) and Lai Haroba (propitiation of traditional deities) — in a diaspora cultural community that has preserved the art form through gurukul transmission since the communities' arrival in Cachar during the 18th and 19th century political upheavals in Manipur. Manipuri dance is characterised by its extreme subtlety — minimal body contact, delicate lateral swaying, eyes following hand gestures, and the absence of vigorous tandava movements — contrasting with the athletic Bharatanatyam or Odissi styles. The female dancer's cylindrical skirt (potloi) and ornate headpiece are iconic Manipuri visual elements. Hailakandi's Manipuri community performs elaborate Rasa Lila cycles during Janmashtami spanning the entire night, with young girl dancers in traditional costume representing the gopis (cowherd women). The Sangeet Natak Akademi has listed Manipuri dance as a classical form and supports gurukul programmes in Imphal, Bishnupur, and diaspora communities including the Barak Valley.
