Gorakhpur Terracotta Cooperative Uttar Pradesh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Gorakhpur in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh is the centre of the Gorakhpur terracotta horse tradition, producing striking large-scale unglazed terracotta horse figurines with flared nostrils, broad chests, and elaborate painted decorative designs that have become one of UP most recognised folk art symbols. The Gorakhpur terracotta industry is concentrated in Aurai village and the Chipiyana area, with Prajapati potter families making horses for votive offering to village deities as well as for contemporary home decoration. Cooperative artisan societies in Gorakhpur supply terracotta to UP government emporiums and export craft fairs. Gorakhpur is also the seat of the Gorakhnath temple, one of North India most powerful Nath yogi institutional centres, creating significant pilgrimage economy. The city produces sugar, edible oil, and fertiliser through industrial cooperative enterprises that also employ rural UP workers.
