Garhwa Rainfed Paddy Tribal Son Valley Farming

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Garhwa district's Son river valley supports rainfed paddy cultivation by Oraon and Chero tribal communities on seasonally flooded river terraces and valley flats that receive 1,100 to 1,300 mm of monsoon rainfall. Garhwa farmers grow traditional low-input rice varieties that require no chemical fertiliser and are suited to the erratic monsoon pattern of western Jharkhand where late or insufficient rainfall frequently reduces yields. The district is food insecure in drought years, and the NREGA watershed development programme has constructed check dams and water harvesting structures in Garhwa's tributaries to improve paddy irrigation reliability.
