Dhubri Goalpara Char River Island Farming Assam Bengal Border
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Dhubri district on the Bangladesh-West Bengal border at the Brahmaputra's western end is a predominantly Muslim district where char (river island) agriculture on the shifting sandy islands of the Brahmaputra supports subsistence jute, mustard, and paddy cultivation by Muslim Bengali small farmers who face annual flood displacement as the Brahmaputra erodes and deposits chars with each monsoon. Dhubri's Mankachar area has a significant handloom tradition of cotton sari weaving, and the district's livestock population (cattle, goat) is important for dairy and meat supply to the Bangladesh border market. Goalpara district (Dhubri's eastern neighbour) contains the Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary — the only protected habitat of the golden langur (Trachypithecus geei) outside Manas National Park.
