Coriander (Dhania) — Baran, Rajasthan
Contributed by System
Rajasthan's Baran, Jhalawar, and Kota districts form India's coriander belt, producing the finest Rajasthani coriander (dhania) seeds used in every Indian kitchen. Rajasthan accounts for 85% of national coriander production. The RCr-41 and RCr-728 varieties from Rajasthan Agricultural Research Institute are the dominant cultivars. Coriander is a rabi crop sown in October-November in black cotton and loamy soils. Seeds are harvested in February-March when 50% of the umbels turn brownish. Threshing, cleaning, and grading occurs at the mandi. Baran coriander seeds are distinctly aromatic, with high essential oil content (0.2-1.0%) due to linalool and borneol compounds. The seeds are used whole or ground (dhania powder) as culinary spice and in herbal medicine (digestive, diuretic). Coriander leaves (fresh cilantro/hara dhania) command premium prices year-round in urban markets. India exports coriander seed and oil to Europe, USA, and Middle East. Baran APM market handles over 2 lakh tonnes annually.
