Patalkot Valley Bharia Tribal Medicine Tradition of Chhindwara
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Patalkot is a remote valley 300 metres below the surrounding Satpura plateau, accessible through rocky cliff passages. The Bharia tribal community here maintained near-complete isolation until the 1980s, preserving a medical knowledge system undiluted by outside influence. Bharia healers use over 150 plant species documented by researchers from Tropical Forest Research Institute, Jabalpur. Key formulations include: Adiantum venustum — a fern — for kidney stones; Helicteres isora fruit for dysentery; Putranjiva roxburghii leaf for fertility. The healers conduct patient intake that combines physical examination with social and emotional history in a holistic diagnostic frame. Post-isolation contact with government health services has created a dual system: Patalkot residents use traditional healers for chronic ailments and government health centres for acute emergencies, a pragmatic integration strategy.
