Barmer Rajasthan Applique Embroidery Camel Leather
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Barmer district in western Rajasthan is known for its distinctively bold patchwork applique embroidery produced by Mutwa and Sindhi communities on home textiles, tents, and wall hangings. Artisans cut geometric mirror-work and colourful fabric patches and sew them onto cotton or wool base fabric in dense mosaic patterns. Camel leather goods — bags, belts, and footwear — embossed with floral motifs are another Barmer craft tradition. Cooperative artisan clusters in Barmer are connected through Rangsutra and Craftmark to Delhi and export markets. Applique tents made by Barmer cooperative artisans are installed at luxury desert camps in Jaisalmer. Women cooperative members in Barmer produce bed covers and cushion covers for hotel supply chains.
