Karan Johar Addresses Criticism of ‘Nadaaniyan’ and Its Lead Actors

Must read

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar recently addressed the harsh critiques directed at his latest production, “Nadaaniyan,” which marked the debut of Ibrahim Ali Khan and featured Khushi Kapoor in her third film. The romantic comedy, released on Netflix on March 7, 2025, has faced significant backlash from both critics and audiences, particularly targeting the performances of its lead actors.

Reception of ‘Nadaaniyan’

Upon its release, “Nadaaniyan” received predominantly negative reviews. Critics pointed out issues such as lackluster chemistry between the leads, subpar acting, and uninspired dialogue delivery. The International Business Times highlighted Ibrahim Ali Khan’s “nasal voice” and “flat expressions,” while noting Khushi Kapoor’s “bland dialogue delivery” as detracting factors in the film.

Social media platforms amplified these critiques, with netizens expressing their disappointment through memes and critical posts. The film’s portrayal of Gen Z romance and the innocence of first love failed to resonate with a broad audience, leading to widespread dissatisfaction.

Karan Johar’s Response

At the trailer launch event for his upcoming production, “Akaal: The Unconquered,” Karan Johar addressed the criticism surrounding “Nadaaniyan.” He acknowledged the role of critics in evaluating films but expressed concern over the severity of some reviews. Johar recounted an instance where a critic wrote, “I want to kick this film,” which he found particularly disturbing. He emphasized that such language borders on violence, stating, “Nobody wants to be kicked because kicking is violence.”

In response to the trolling of Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor, Johar quoted a line from an old film: “Kuch toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna… chhodo bekaar ki baatein, beet na jaaye raina” (People will always talk; it’s their job to do so… let go of unnecessary chatter before the night slips away). This reflects his perspective on handling public opinion and criticism.

Support from the Film Industry

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta also came forward in defense of the young actors. He criticized the harshness of the critiques, suggesting that people are being unnecessarily severe towards Ibrahim and Khushi. Mehta’s support underscores a call for more constructive criticism, especially for newcomers in the industry.

The mixed reception of “Nadaaniyan” has sparked discussions about the treatment of debutant actors and the nature of film criticism. While constructive feedback is essential for artistic growth, industry leaders like Karan Johar and Hansal Mehta advocate for a more compassionate approach, recognizing the challenges faced by newcomers in Bollywood.
